What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent does part of the work for the shopper: it finds products, compares them, answers questions about them and in some cases completes the purchase. The agent might be an assistant on your own storefront or it might be ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot acting for a shopper who never visits your site.
For a merchant, the definition that matters is narrower. Agentic commerce is the point where your store has to be readable by software as well as by people. An agent can only recommend and sell what it can read. It can only be trusted when what it reads is current.
How agentic commerce differs from ecommerce
Ecommerce put the store on a web page. A shopper searched, browsed, filtered and decided. The page was designed for a person. Good page design and SEO won the visit.
In agentic commerce the shopper starts with a question to an AI assistant and decides inside the conversation. Checkout can follow the conversation to wherever it happens. What wins visibility shifts from page design to data: structured, complete and live product, price, inventory and policy information that an agent can read and act on.
| Ecommerce | Agentic commerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Where shoppers start | A search engine or your homepage | A question to an AI assistant |
| How they find products | Keyword search and filters | Asking, comparing and deciding in conversation |
| Who does the browsing | The shopper | The shopper and an agent acting for them |
| What wins visibility | Page design and SEO | Structured data context, complete and live |
| Where checkout happens | Your cart | Wherever the conversation happens |
Why agentic commerce is a data problem first
Most commerce data was built for web pages. Adobe Digital Insights measured the average retail product page as about 66% readable to AI in Q1 2026. The missing third is what agents most often need to close a sale:
Variant-level inventory, contract pricing, orders and returns live in the ERP and OMS, not on the product page.
Ratings, materials, dimensions and compatibility are often locked in PDFs.
Fit, compatibility and install guidance usually live in the heads of your best associates and installers.
Return rules, shipping exceptions and answers to past questions sit in a help desk.

When an agent sees the wrong price or a sold-out variant, it loses the sale. When it cannot find the answer at all, it recommends a store that published one. Software that scrapes your site cannot recover the missing third, because it was never on the site.
This is why we treat agentic commerce as data work before it is channel work. Channels change quickly, while the data they all read improves only when someone does the work.
How big agentic commerce is expected to get
The forecasts vary. All of them are large:
Morgan Stanley estimates agentic shoppers could account for $190 billion to $385 billion in US ecommerce spending by 2030 (December 2025).
McKinsey estimates agentic commerce could reach up to $1 trillion in US B2C retail revenue by 2030 (October 2025).
Adobe Digital Insights reports that traffic from AI assistants converted 42% better than other traffic in March 2026, a record high.
Treat the dollar figures as directional. The conversion figure is the one already showing up in merchants' analytics.
Where agentic commerce happens
Shoppers can already buy in more places than your storefront and marketplaces:

Every one of these reads the same thing: your product, price and inventory data. Build that once and keep it live. Each new channel then starts from data that already works.
How merchants get started with agentic commerce
Most merchants start on the storefront they already run. It is the channel they control completely. It also exposes their data gaps fast. Every question an assistant cannot answer on your own site is a question an outside agent cannot answer either.
Webscale AI takes merchants through agentic commerce in a set order. Forward Deployed Engineers audit the catalog and map every source an agent will need, including interviews with your product experts. The Commerce Context Engine connects those sources, normalizes them and keeps them live. The AI Shopping Assistant then launches on your storefront and answers from that context. AI chat ads and off-site checkout extend from the same data layer as those channels grow.
Questions
Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent helps the shopper find, compare and buy products, either on a merchant's own site or inside an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Gemini. It depends on product, price, inventory and policy data that the agent can read and trust.
Conversational commerce describes the interface: a shopper chats instead of clicking. Agentic commerce describes who does the work. An agent can search, compare, answer and sometimes complete the purchase on the shopper's behalf, inside your store or outside it.
No. Your own storefront is an agentic channel as soon as it runs an AI shopping assistant. It is also the one you control completely. Outside assistants read the same product and inventory data, so fixing that data for your own site is also the preparation for every other channel.
Usually because the answer was never in the data they read. About a third of what an agent needs lives off the product page, in back-office systems, spec sheets and the knowledge of product experts. See why AI gives wrong answers about your products.
Webscale AI starts with the data. Forward Deployed Engineers find what agents cannot answer today. The Commerce Context Engine keeps that data complete and live. The AI Shopping Assistant then launches on the merchant's existing storefront. It runs alongside Adobe Commerce, Magento, Shopify, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and BigCommerce with no replatforming.
No. The data layer an agent needs can run alongside your current commerce platform. Webscale AI's Commerce Context Engine reads from the systems you already run. Those systems stay the source of truth.
